"Using the right words in your resume"

When writing your resume, you will naturally tend to use lots of adjectives, and there are some good ones. But adjectives, although having a necessary place, can seem forced, artificial, over inflated, or even passive, especially if they’re not well used. Too many adjectives, or the wrong choice of adjectives, can make your resume or C.V. seem unprofessional, inexperienced, clumsy, pushy, unbelievable, even careless and lazy (much like this sentence).

One way of overcoming this is to use a professional resume service to edit and refine your very important document. That’s what your resume is: a very important document. It sells who you are to the prospective employer; and must compete against many others, including those professionally written and edited.

Verbs are powerful, have authenticity and energy about them. Verbs engage the reader in a positive manner. That’s what you want. You want the personnel manager, office administrator, boss or whoever is tackling the job of employing new staff members, to feel positive when reading your resume or C.V.

The following lists of verbs can be used as either present tense or past tense. However, present tense can be extremely difficult to use and may come across as clumsy or inadequately convey your meaning. The rule of thumb is, always go with past tense except when explaining/demonstrating tasks and abilities which you are currently undertaking.

EXAMPLE:

  • Present tense: Since passing my technical training course I provide ongoing third level technical support to ensure day to day operations are running smoothly and efficiently.

  • Past tense: Using my own initiative I undertook the advanced technical training course and successfully passed as a third level support technician. This enabled me to move into a role of responsibility for ensuring the smooth operation of our client’s systems and for maintaining day to day efficiencies.

  • It is also a good idea to choose verbs which are more specific to the industry in which you have experience and/or are seeking a new position. Many of the words in the following lists are interchangeable between industries so look at all of them when writing your resume or C.V. Following is a collection of industry specific verbs and then a combined list which can be used for almost any position.

TIP: To give yourself the best possible opportunity and advantage, what you need are verbs and ‘I’ statements.

It is important to focus on your achievements and results. While showing you are a team player can be beneficial, you are not out ot sell the team, you MUST sell yourself.

    EXAMPLE:

  • Neutral: We were able to save the situation and improve things for the customer while making more money.

  • Positive: Through my actions, we were able to salvage the situation and build on our long term relationship with the customer. This allowed me to further streamline the business processes in place and provide an improved outcome for the customer while increasing profit margins.
